Franz Kafka, while largely unknown during his own lifetime (1883-1924), left a legacy of strange and brilliant short stories and novels that put him among a handful of the best writers of the 20th Century. Works like “The Metamorphosis,” “In the Penal Colony,” “The Trial,” and “A Hunger Artist” are observations of modern bureaucracy, existential torment and general angst told through absurdly creative scenarios that move between the worlds of bizarre fantasy and metaphysics with unique ease. W. H. Auden called Kafka “the Dante of the twentieth century.” We just dig him the most, man.
